1. The "Pepper" Drill: Warm-Up with a Twist

Starting practice with a good warm-up is essential for both safety and performance. One of the most enjoyable volleyball warm-up drills for kids is the "Pepper" drill. This drill pairs up players, and they pass, set, and hit the ball to each other in a controlled sequence.

  • Why it's fun: Kids enjoy the fast-paced nature of this drill, and it’s a great way to get them moving quickly.

  • Skills developed: Passing, setting, and hitting technique.

  • Tip: Keep the intensity moderate and focus on form during the warm-up to avoid injury.

2. The "Balloon Volleyball" Drill: Perfect for Beginners

For younger kids or those new to the sport, Balloon Volleyball is a fantastic introduction. Instead of regular volleyball, players use a balloon, which slows down the game and allows kids to focus on positioning and movement.

  • Why it's fun: The balloon's slower movement makes it easier for children to practice without pressure, and they love the challenge of keeping it in the air.

  • Skills developed: Basic passing, positioning, and anticipation.

  • Tip: Increase the difficulty by adding more balloons or using a slightly heavier ball as kids improve.

3. "King of the Court": Friendly Competition

This popular drill involves dividing kids into small teams that compete in a fast-paced rotation. Teams play mini-games to a set number of points, and the winner stays on the court while the other team rotates off.

  • Why it's fun: The short, competitive rounds keep kids engaged and encourage them to give their best effort in every play.

  • Skills developed: Game strategy, teamwork, and all-around volleyball skills.

  • Tip: Rotate teams often and encourage sportsmanship to keep the drill lighthearted and fun.

4. The "Relay Serving" Drill: Improving Serve Accuracy

Serving is one of the most essential volleyball skills, and making it fun for kids is key. In this drill, players are divided into teams and must serve the ball over the net into specific target areas. The first team to hit all the targets wins.

  • Why it's fun: Kids love the challenge of aiming for targets, and the team aspect adds a layer of excitement.

  • Skills developed: Serve accuracy and consistency.

  • Tip: Use cones or hula hoops as targets on the opposite side of the net to add variety.

5. "Partner Passing Challenge": Strengthening Communication

Pairing kids up for this drill encourages them to communicate and work together. Players pass the ball back and forth, but the twist is that they have to do it as many times as possible without letting the ball drop.

  • Why it's fun: The challenge to keep the ball in the air promotes cooperation and focus, and kids enjoy setting records with their partners.

  • Skills developed: Passing technique and teamwork.

  • Tip: Add challenges like using only one hand or setting the ball instead of passing to make the drill more challenging.

6. "Cone Smashing": A Fun Accuracy Drill

Place cones on the opposite side of the net and have players attempt to knock them over by spiking or hitting the ball. Kids thoroughly enjoy this, one of the more competitive volleyball practice drills.

  • Why it's fun: Kids love the visual aspect of trying to knock over the cones, and it adds a game-like element to their training.

  • Skills developed: Spiking accuracy, hand-eye coordination, and power.

  • Tip: Encourage players to aim for different areas of the court to improve their all-around hitting skills.

7. "Sharks and Minnows": Movement and Coordination

This fun game incorporates volleyball movements and is an excellent exercise for volleyball players. One player (the "shark") stands on one side of the net, while the other players (the "minnows") must run across without getting tagged. The "shark" tags them by throwing a volleyball, and tagged players become sharks too.

  • Why it's fun: The chase-and-evade element makes this a thrilling drill for kids.

  • Skills developed: Agility, quick movement, and coordination.

  • Tip: Use this as a fun way to end practice and work on quick reflexes in a playful setting.
